Special Issue in the Vietnam Journal of Education

QUALITATIVE JOURNEYS: REFLECTING ON EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH AND EXPLORING NEW HORIZONS

Education, known for its interdisciplinary nature, intersects with fields such as economics, politics, sociology, history, and psychology. Analysis of educational issues, therefore, necessitates a diversity of research methods. Qualitative approaches have gained increasing prominence in academic research due to their ability to offer profound insights, connect with real-world contexts, and enable theoretical generalizations. Also, educational qualitative researchers have drawn on theories and methods from diverse fields, challenging the conventional boundaries between disciplines (Bogdan & Biklen, 2007; Creswell, 2015; Hatch, 2002; Ward & Delamont, 2020).

Discussions around qualitative research often transcend mere research methods. Indeed, qualitative research embodies a kaleidoscopic worldview, departing from the linear mode of thinking to invite us to navigate and understand the intricate mosaic of human society. This perspective acknowledges that the social world is crafted not just by physical elements but also by a wealth of inner experiences, life stories, and complex social dynamics. Qualitative research deepens our engagement with the world, revealing varied nuances, subtle interconnections, and constant evolutions, thereby unlocking our comprehension and interpretation of educational matters.

In Vietnam, qualitative research has been marginalized in favor of quantitative methods. This trend has been reinforced by decades of economic-focused development emphasizing indicators and quantitative measures. This bias is evident in educational policies and research, where the social sciences and humanities have not been afforded the same level of attention and resources as other areas, such as STEM and technology (Ho, 2023; Pham & Hayden, 2019). Yet, the complexities of modern society and its global challenges demand researchers to possess a more nuanced understanding and engage more rigorously with qualitative research, as it contributes to effectively addressing multifaceted educational and societal issues.

In this spirit, we invite you to participate in Qualitative Journeys, a project within VERI (Vietnam Educational Research Initiative) designed to foster reflection and discussion on our collective experiences with qualitative research — past, present, and future. Through this project, we aspire to advance the study and application of qualitative methodologies among educational researchers and practitioners in Vietnam. Quality contributions will be published in the Special Issue of the Vietnam Journal of Education (VJE) and a monograph on qualitative research (see details below).

Topics of Discussion

We welcome articles of various types (e.g., original research, reflections, systematic/integrative reviews, conceptual papers) adopting innovative approaches that are related to, but not limited to, the following issues:

Using qualitative methods in educational studies (e.g., education policy, STEM education, language education, educational program assessment, multicultural education, education for sustainable development, inclusive education).
Traditional qualitative research designs (e.g., narrative inquiry, qualitative case study, phenomenology, document/discourse analysis, ethnography, grounded theory) and their application in specific contexts.
Potentials of emerging qualitative research approaches (e.g., post-qualitative inquiry, arts-based research, poetic inquiry, comparative case study, photovoice, design-based research, longitudinal research, big data for qualitative research, AI-assisted qualitative analysis, netnography).
Researcher positionality and reflexivity.
Qualitative approaches in mixed methods educational research.
Challenges and opportunities in qualitative research’s fieldwork and implications for educational research.
Experiences, approaches, and creative methods in analyzing and interpreting qualitative data.
The role of theories in qualitative research.
Teaching research methods and qualitative research.

Submission Guidelines

Abstract

Abstracts in Vietnamese or English should be sent by May 15, 2024 to the following email address: [email protected]">[email protected]

The abstract should not exceed 300 words (English) or 500 words (Vietnamese), including research questions/objectives, research methods, data sources, (expected) findings, and conclusions/ implications. If the abstract is accepted, the authors will receive a notification and an invitation to submit the full text (see Publication for more details).

Full Article

Papers must be original, unpublished works, and should not be under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Language of submission for the Special Issue in VJE: English

Length of full papers: 6,000 words (inclusive of the reference list) following the structure as specified at http://vje.vn/index.php/journal/submission-guidelines. Further instructions for the submission procedure will be provided later.

Writing Workshops

To encourage collaboration and support in the writing process, we will coordinate with relevant partners to organize small-scale seminars focusing on academic writing. Authors contributing articles to the Qualitative Journeys project will be encouraged to apply if interested. Workshop details, including time and place, will be announced when they are available.

Publication

After the peer review process, articles in English will be published in the Special Issue of the Vietnam Journal of Education (VJE). Any article ready for Online First publication can be published online as early as this year (2024).

Articles in Vietnamese will continue to be collected for the Qualitative Research Monograph project. Specific information about this book project will be sent to contributing authors and the VERI community.

In the recent decades, we have witnessed a growing trend of internationalization of higher education (IoHE) across the world. In Asia, in particular, the IoHE is in line with the growing dynamic of the socio-economy of the region. IoHE in Asia might be observed from different levels (i.e., regional, national, local and institutional) and different aspects (i.e., curriculum, teaching and learning, student and/or faculty mobilities, research, ranking). IoHE, indeed, has stemmed from various motivations from different actors, including policy makers, institutional leaders, academics and practitioners, students, parents, industry partners and communities. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, IoHE in Asian countries was often regarded as less developed than their counterparts from the Western world. Nevertheless, the COVID-19 outbreak has opened opportunities for Asian countries and institutions to explore and introduce innovative internationalised and transnational programs, capitalizing on digital technologies, new models of international collaborations and changing demands for international education in Asia. In addition, IoHE has become more vulnerable to not only bi-lateral collaborations but also regional and global shifts in international relations. Taking into account these contextual factors, the “Internationalization of Higher Education in Dynamic Asia” (IoHE-DA) Special Issue provides a forum to discuss critical issues, new developments and emerging trends and models in IoHE in Asia.

Names, bios and experiences of Guest Editors

Prof. Ly Tran has been an editor for a range of special issues and edited collections, including the latest SI of Higher Education Research Development on the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on HE, the latest SI of Transitions on the international student experience in New Zealand and an award-winning edited collection (see details below). Tran has a strong track record of publishing high quality research that has attracted a significant number of readers in Australia, Asia and internationally. She is the author of Deakin most-read article on the Conversation in the past year. Her article international graduates during COVID-19 has reached over 210,000 readers since its publication in April 2020. Another article that she co-authored on the Conversation, entitled “The coronavirus outbreak is the biggest crisis ever to hit international education”, has been re-published by more than 30 media outlets.

Her articles on international higher education has been featured in more than 100 Australian and international media outlets, including ABC News TV, ABC News Radio, ABC Radio’s National Interest, ABC Pacific Beat, SBS (across different languages including Vietnamese, Mandarin, and Nepali), the Australian, the Australian Financial Review, Times Higher Education, the Conversation, University World News, Xinhua, China Daily, East Asia Forum, Campus Review, Campus Morning Mail and Geelong Advertiser. Since 2019, her work has featured on more than 100 media outlets in Vietnam, Asia, the UK and Australia. This demonstrates the significant national and cross-national outreach and impacts of her publications. Tran is also active in sharing insights from her work and publications on other channels such as LinkedIn, Twitter, ResearchGate, Academia, and professional websites. Her posts on LinkedIn and tweets about her work and publications have engaged a considerable number of readers. For example, a tweet and a LinkedIn post sharing insights about her work in international education in January 2020 attracted 26,059 impressions and 24,977 views respectively. The editors believe that their continued efforts, commitments, and strategies to share their work with the key stakeholders and broader community will also assist in the promotion of this proposed SI.

Dr. Tien-Trung Nguyen is an Associate Professor at VNU University of Education, Vietnam where he leads a research group, namely “Research Group on Educational Sciences and Policies - ESP”. Dr Tien-Trung also serves as senior editor for the Vietnam Journal of Education, Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training. His main research interests consist of mathematics education (Realistic Mathematics Education), STEM education, teacher training, higher education, educational management and policy, and scientific publication. Nguyen has published nearly 40 articles SSCI/ESCI/Scopus-indexed papers and book chapters. He is also a member of the Asian Council of Science Editors; and the Council of Interdisciplinary Science in Psychology and Education (National Foundation for Science and Technology Development - NAFOSTED, Vietnam).

Dr. Hiep-Hung Pham is a senior education researcher and consultant. He is currently director of Center for Research and Practice on Education, Phu Xuan University Vietnam. He also affiliates with several other institutions such as Center for Educational Research and Development EdLab Asia (Director of Research), VNU University of Education (member of Science & Education Committee), Thanh Do University (co-head of Reduvation research group). In 2020, he was appointed as Vietnam Country Director of STAR Scholars, an international forum of scholars that advances global social mobility by using research and advocacy. In 2021, he was appointed as Co-editor, Evaluation Review. Dr. Pham got his PhD in International Business Administration at Chinese Culture University, Taiwan (ROC) in 2017. In 2013, Dr. Pham was Endeavour Research Fellow, conducting research at Center of Studies in Higher Education, The University of Melbourne. Dr. Pham’s topics of research include international education, education reform and research policy. Pham has published 50+ SSCI/ESCI/Scopus-indexed papers and book chapters. Apart from academic activities, Dr. Pham also usually involve in professional and practical exercises in order to promote the development of education such as consultant/resource person (for the Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training, Vietnam’s National Assembly, the World Bank, ADB, GAPO, SEAMEO-RIHED and several educational institutions), correspondent (for University World News, the UK), and columnist and commentator (for local and international media outlets). Dr. Pham has won a number of recognitions and awards, including: Outstanding Reviewer, Emerald Award Literati (2021;) Outstanding Faculty for Internationalization Award of CIES Study Abroad & International Students SIG (2022).

Guidelines for abstract and full paper submission

All abstracts and full papers must be submitted in American English.
An abstract of max. 200 words (incl. research aims, methods, findings and significance) and a short bio (max. 100 words) are required. Your abstract will undergo a double-blind peer review by the international scientific committee after its receipt.
If your abstract is accepted, you will be invited to submit a full paper (see deadline below) which might be considered to be published in a Special Issue for Journal of International Students or Policy Futures in Education, subject to peer review.
Full papers should address both theoretical issues and new research findings. Your paper should be compiled in the following order:
- Title page; abstract; keywords (4-6 keywords)
- Introduction to the research problem, research questions or research hypothesis
- Literature review
- Research methods
- Results and discussion
- Conclusion
- Acknowledgement
- References (APA 7^th edition style)

Full papers will go through a double-blind reviewing process and are expected to meet the academic rigour and originality criteria set out by the journals. You may be required to submit the revised paper before the stated deadline.
Full accepted papers will be selected for oral presentation.

Publication

Accepted papers of the conference would be further reviewed and considered for publication in the Special Issue of the SCOPUS indexed journals such as: Policy Futures in Education (ISSN: 1478-2103, Q2, Scopus); and Journal of International Students (ISSN: 2162-3104, Q2, Scopus). The Special Issue for Journal of International Students will feature high quality papers on international student mobilities in Asia while the Special Issue for Policy Futures in Education will focus on internationalization of higher education in Asia.

Other accepted articles will be published in a special issue of the Vietnam Journal of Education (ISSN: 2588-1477, 2815-5572, https://vje.vn).

SUSTAINABLE AND CRISIS-RESPONSIVE TEACHER EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

CALL FOR SPECIAL ISSUE - VIETNAM JOURNAL OF EDUCATION (VJE)

The last fifty years has witnessed challenges and opportunities in teacher education to prepare the capable workforce to meet the ever-changing demands of the job market. Policy makers, researchers and educators across the world have also discussed persistent and emerging issues facing the teaching profession. These issues include teachers’ low salaries but high demand for the profession, low enrollments in teacher preparation programs but high turnover rates, and declining trust from society but rising expectations from stakeholders in education. In these times of pandemic and uncertainty, teachers at all levels in Vietnam as well as in various contexts are facing new challenges due to the constant switch between onsite and online learning. However, they are increasingly expected to be on the frontline as problem solvers, change agents, leaders, and technology, social and emotional supporters.

So how have teacher trainers and educators done to support in-service and pre-service teachers to successfully perform these important roles? In what ways have teacher education and professional development programs engaged in building teacher resilience both professionally and personally? What are new issues these programs need to pay attention to support teachers to cope with crises in the future and assure ongoing quality student learning?

Thus, Vietnam Journal of Education, in collaboration with EduNet, would like to invite research contributions that deal with the sustainable development of the teacher workforce for a sustainable future of education to publish in a special issue. This will enable a large readership for the purposes of accessing, studying, referencing, and sharing the findings of research conducted by both national and international scholars. We welcome articles that are related to issues including but not limited to:

policies on teaching profession;
teacher preparation, professional development, and induction programs;
course design and evaluation of these programs;
theories and innovative practices in teacher education and professional development such as culturally-responsive teaching, equity and social justice, environmental and sustainability education;
teacher wellbeing and self-care;
teacher leadership capacity building;
teacher education and professional development in online and blended learning;
teacher education and professional development in effective learning environments that are responsive to natural disasters and pandemics.

GUEST EDITORS

Dr Khong Thi Diem Hang, Monash University

Dr Khong Thi Diem Hang is currently a Teaching Associate at Faculty of Education, Monash University. She is also a collaborator of EduNet, AVSE Global. She earned her Master of Educational Studies and PhD in education at the University of Queensland, Australia in 2013 and 2020 respectively. Her research interests include classroom talk, critical thinking, teacher professional development and learning, school reform, lesson study, and education policy. She has been a volunteer to support schools and teachers in Bac Giang Province to implement Professional Teachers’ Meetings based on Lesson Study since 2007. This model has now become a national policy, particularly at primary school level. She has published articles in highly regarded international peer-reviewed journals and book chapters under prestigious publishers. Particularly, one of her papers was awarded the Most Read Article throughout 2014 of Educational Review, making it to Class of 2015 which includes free articles in 2015. She has also served a reviewer for renowned international journals.

Dr Nguyen Phuong Thao, Hanoi National University of Education

Dr Nguyen Phuong Thao is currently a lecturer at Hanoi National University of Education. She earned her BA and MA in geography education at the same university and her PhD in geography education at Muenster University, Germany. Her research interests include education for the sustainable development, geography education, teacher capacity building, pedagogies, and climate change (vulnerability due to climate change, climate change education, and community-based adaptation). Dr Thao has published articles in educational science in SCI, SSCI and Scopus journals (Q1 and Q2) and served as a reviewer for highly regarded international journals.
